In Motion | May 2025

This month in In Motion, we share an article on the development of Physical AI and the key component of smart actuation systems in the rise of this technology. A new engineering resource is introduced, an FAQ on shaft customization and Iris Tutorials on operating your ORCA™ motors in Force Mode. Finally, we extend a thank you to those who visited us at our Automate 2025 booth.

Whitepaper: What is Physical AI? The Role of Smart Linear Motors in Intelligent Machines

Smart actuation systems role in physical artificial intelligence

As AI systems evolve, they're expanding beyond software and extending into the physical world, not just through thinking and analyzing, but sensing, moving, manipulating, and responding in real time. At the heart of this convergence from software to physical adoption are high performing actuation systems. Engineered for this new generation of intelligent machines and Industry 4.0, ORCA™ motors deliver the precision, responsiveness, and adaptability required for real-time, closed-loop control.

Iris FAQs: Is Shaft Customization Offered?

Permanent magnetic shaft customization offered on smart linear motors

A common question we receive concerns shaft customization: Can I customize the length of my shaft? The short answer is yes! You can specify the shaft length anywhere from 10 to 40 inches, in whole-inch increments. We understand that our diverse customer base spans across several industries; this customization allows you to tailor the shaft length to the needs of your specific application.

Operating your ORCA Motor in Force Mode - Where Applied Force Is More Critical Than Exact Position

Operating your smart linear motor in force mode

ORCA motors have five modes of operation: Sleep Mode, Force Mode, Position Mode, Haptic Mode, and Kinematic Mode. This short video tutorial will cover how to get started with the two force control modes: Force Mode and Haptic Mode. Force control can be especially effective in systems where the amount of force applied is more important than the exact position, for example, polishing and grinding, spring simulations, end-of-line manufacturing validation, and medical rehabilitation devices.

Automate 2025: Thanks for Visiting Us!

Iris Dynamics at Automate 2025 engineering trade show

Thank you to everyone who visited our booth this May at Automate 2025 and stepped into the future of linear motion with us. Our team was delighted to provide hands-on experiences with ORCA motors, dive into conversations about all things linear motion, and learn about your innovative applications. If you missed us at the show, don't worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ve put together a full recap and recorded each of our live demonstrations for you to catch up on.
