How To Set Up an ORCA™ Motor in 10 Minutes or Less With ORCA-USB™

ORCA motors ship with everything you need to get your motor moving with your preferred control solution, including direct connection to a computer. Each motor is shipped with an ORCA-USB™, and a Quickstart card. If you purchased an ORCA motor prior to March 17, 2026, you would have received an ORCA Motor Starter Kit with differing set up components. For a set up guide with the previous ORCA Motor Starter Kit please refer to this tutorial. Effective March 17, 2026, the ORCA-USB has become the standard way to connect your motor to a PC. 

 

Why Use ORCA Motors?

ORCA motors ship with everything you need to get your motor moving with your preferred control solution, including direct connection to a computer. Each motor is shipped with an ORCA-USB, and Quickstart card. 

Follow Along with Written Instructions

Unpack your motor and mount it to a secure surface using any of the mounting points. Here we are using a 3D printed shoe mount. The CAD file for this mount is available on the downloads page

Use caution when handling the motor near metal objects, as the shaft contains strong magnets. 

Attach the motor to a suitable DC power supply. If you're not sure which power supply to choose, you can find more information on the articles and whitepapers page on our website. 

Connect the motor's RJ45 data cable to the ORCA-USB. Connect the ORCA-USB to a USB-B cable.

2 comm ports will now be visible in your device manager. One for the RS485 serial interface, used for communicating with our in-house software, IrisControls. The other is the RS422 serial interface, used for Modbus communication.

You can now try some of the example kinematic motions in IrisControls and get your motor moving. It's that simple.
